Mind and Body
I know you have all heard about putting on the freshman 20, 30, or 40. Not a
good thing!  A topic I think is greatly glossed over, or not even mentioned, is the
importance of staying healthy, fit, and active in college in order to get good
grades. College comes with new found freedom that can make you fat, lazy, and
very unhealthy. Staying up all night cramming, or partying, drinking like there's no
tomorrow, and eating nothing but fast food all lead to poor health, and possibly
very bad grades.
I  watched the "science of sleep" special by 60 Minutes in my physiological
psychology class and was stunned by the effects sleep deprivation can have on
your body. Rats die of sleep deprivation in 5 days, just as fast as they would if
they were starved!! Sleep is just as essential as food, but unfortunately, we live in
a society where sleep is seen as a waste of time. People believe that their body
"adapts" to less sleep but this is so FALSE! You need 6 1/2 to 8 hours nightly, after
just one day of being sleep deprived you are impaired from doing the simplest
tasks. Not sleeping enough is a factor in developing type two diabetes because
we are hungrier when we don't sleep enough, so we tend to put on weight. You
think staying up all night studying for a test is good?? NOPE!! Not only is
procrastinating not the way to go for an exam, but  you remember things better
if you get a good night sleep , so it's better that you don't study everything, but
sleep well, than to not sleep and not remember much at all.

Try to eat as well as you can, maintain a healthy weight, and stay active. Being
physically fit provides you with more energy, and the ability to focus better. The
more energy, focus, and good health you have the less likely are you to miss class
because of illness, and the better chances you have of getting good grades.

Drinking and drugs are a huge issue on college campuses, especially if you join a
fraternity/soroity. Stand up for yourself, and be responsible when drinking, and
stay drug free. You risk the chance of killing yourself , or others when you are
drunk, and it causes huge health problems, including cancer, liver cirrhosis,
heartburn, ulcers, etc. To learn more go to
www.drugfree.org.

There are health centers on campus where you can get physicals, STD testing,
pregnancy tests, and other services. The school charges you a student health fee
as part of your tuition so take advantage of your student health center. STD
testing is very important, early detection can prevent further spread, and further
complications, so get tested!!! For more information visit
 www.hivtest.org,
www.think.mtv.com.

Your school also has counseling services, and student advisement that can really
help you be successful in school. If you need to talk to someone about a
problem, need help, or can't choose your classes, use these services, you pay a
lot of money to go there, so take advantage of your resources.

Take care of your body, and your mind, make good choices and stay fit. You only
get one body, take care of it!
